Honey Girl Review
3.5/5 ⭐️s
This was a fun read. It reminded me a bit of the marriage plot by Jeffrey Eugenides but sapphic and more upbeat. I don’t know how I feel about it now that I finished it — I kind of hate the main character. Her inability to be in touch with her emotions creates every problem in the book, not that that’s necessarily bad, but I just felt like her realization hit really late.
I did really like how she talked about being a queer black woman trying to navigate the world of academia. I loved how she decided teaching was good for her because she knew that research would be hard forever and sometimes you don’t want a career that’s going to be hard forever. I kind of love that about the book — the way that sometimes you have to rethink your dream because it isn’t just a dream it’s also a struggle and a harsh reality.
Overall, I liked this book but it isn’t my favorite thing I’ve ever read, hence the 3.5 stars. I would recommend this if you’re looking for a quick, easy read with beautiful language that will make you think about your life.
